Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"I recently tried a smash burger from this place, and I have to say — the taste was amazing. The patty was flavorful, juicy, and cooked just right, and the overall flavor really hit the spot. However, I did feel that the portion size was a bit on the smaller side compared to the price. With a burger that tastes this good, you naturally expect a little more to enjoy."
"Phat boys on city is a hidden gem for fresh, high quality burgers. I’ve been going for two years and it never disappoints. The Angus burger and loaded beef are must-tries-juicy, flavourful, and worth every penny. The hardworking staff serve up great food quickly, making it perfect for a grab-and-go meal. If you love a good burger, this place is a must-visit"
"Best burgers in Cardiff. always my go to scran after a sesh. Never disappoints"
"First time trying the beef loaded, i must say 10/10 rating from me, the beef was so nice and soft with a delicious taste. Deffo worth the trip from Bristol. Service was great staff lovely & friendly."
"Fan bloody tastic, the quality is amazing, we went for smashed beef burgers and smashed chicken burgers, not forgetting the loaded chicken fries. Absolutely stunning! Both the chicken and beef smashed burgers were so full of flavour, the chicken burger sauce was a little on the spicy side for me but would have again just without the spicy sauce because the chicken was top notch, way better than any other chicken burger I’ve had. The smashed beef burger stole the show for me, really tasty patties, perfect amount of sauce, great pickles and bun. Loaded fries were amazing, they didn’t scrimp on the chicken and also had a bit of a kick! I’m putting my neck out there and saying possibly the best burgers I’ve had in South Wales ???????????????????????? from us, we will be back! It was worth the trip from Penarth"
"This is the best burger spot in Cardiff, probably the whole of Wales. The burger is always 10/10, the staff are always welcoming and just know if the ginger boy is there your food and service will be even better. Genuinely is my go to food spot!"
"First time trying. I've tried most burger joints around City Road / Albany Road. I got the 9oz Angus burger from Phat Boys and in my opinion it's the best one, it has that juicy, meaty taste that you'd look like you'd expect from when you see an American burger joint. It's a real shame it's takeaway only, but I'd say from a purely meaty burger standpoint it's #1 in the area."
"There’s something almost poetic about stumbling across a proper burger van that doesn’t just sling out reheated patties but actually cares about what ends up in your hands. Phat Boys Burger Van is one of those rare finds. No frills no nonsense just a serious focus on flavour that caught me completely off guard. Oh and everything’s halal too which is always great to see more places getting right. Let’s start with the Angus burger 9oz which I’ll admit I ordered with cautious optimism. One bite in and I was genuinely impressed. The patty had a proper sear on the outside giving it that slight crunch before giving way to a juicy rich centre full of beefy depth. It wasn’t just meat slapped between bread it tasted like someone actually respected the cow it came from. The seasoning was spot on subtle but enough to highlight the flavour rather than drown it. The bun held everything together without going soggy and the toppings were fresh and nicely balanced nothing overpowered anything else. It was just a well executed solid burger done right. Now as good as that was the chicken smash burger completely stole the show. This thing was outrageously juicy like next level messy in the best kind of way. The chicken had this crispy edge from the smash technique but inside it stayed tender and ridiculously moist. What really made it sing though were the sauces. They didn’t just sit there they soaked into every layer of the burger bringing a tangy creamy slightly spicy mix that made each bite feel like a whole new experience. It was indulgent unapologetic and honestly one of the best chicken burgers I’ve had from a van or anywhere really. Service wise it was refreshingly quick. No hanging about waiting half an hour like some places that want to make a performance out of flipping a burger. These guys know their craft and they move with purpose. Now the only real knock I’ve got and it’s not insignificant is the cash only policy. In 2025 it does feel a bit odd to be fumbling around for notes and coins especially when everything else about the experience is so dialled in. Card payments should really be a standard by now and it’s the one thing that pulls the whole setup slightly back in time. But that aside if you’re after a halal burger that actually gives a damn about how it tastes and you don’t mind carrying a bit of cash Phat Boys is absolutely worth the stop."
